Evening’s Calm

img_0041trieste

My favorite time of the day. Evening. The sun is setting with a little color peeking through the trees or over the roofs. The water is still as it’s finished for the day. It signifies how I feel… relaxed. It’s my time to think about how the day went and what to expect for tomorrow. I find this time of day the most inspiring. I like to go out for a walk and watch people winding down or revving up. It gets me excited for what is next and is a great time to plan the future. What time of day is the most inspiring for you?

Madras in a Boy’s Room

Picture 113

I am a fan of the madras quilt. My little boy is growing up and I will soon be lucky enough to decorate his new big boy bedroom. I’ve had my eye on the madras quilt from Pottery Barn Kids for probably about a year by now. Does the thought of decorating a new room inspire you? I love the dark, boy colors of the lines and squares in the madras. The room’s walls are already a bright, fun green. I’ll add navy blue curtains with a navy, shag rug. The shag will help make it a little whimsical even though the color is so dark. The bright green will also assist the room in remaining a little youthful. The madras is such a wonderful pattern because there are so many colors that it’s easy to match it to whatever we want. I love decorating and find it so inspiring!

Living Abroad… at Home

Sometimes I daydream about living abroad. How about I bring abroad home and live in a European-style home here in the United States. I found some gorgeous homes online that look very European and have a charm that I adore. I can imagine having a quiet, fashionable life in one of these. These homes certainly inspire me to live a distinct way. I would want to grow flowers that belong across the pond or maybe I’d invite friends over for tea time in the garden. Do you also find these homes and landscapes very inspiring?

People Watch: Evora

img_1668

In Evora, Portugal, there are many men hanging around chatting with their buddies in the Praça do Geraldo or the main square. What a great place to people watch. I wonder what they are talking about. They have probably known each other their entire lives. There aren’t many women of the same age group out and about. Because of this, the town is reminiscent of earlier times. I’d like to hang out and relax like this on a daily basis. What a perfect town for a man! Is people watching inspiring for you? People watching definitely gets my imagination going. I imagine who each person is, what sort of trouble he has gotten into or what he is deciding to do with the rest of his day. It’s fun. At times like this, it’s nice to have a journal or camera in hand!

Laundry Rooms

I can’t say looking at photos of laundry rooms inspires me to do laundry but looking at the photos does inspire me to get organized! I love these rooms. My laundry room is mango orange (which is really bright) and it has one yellow wall. I wanted to make it bright and fun. With matching bright orange baskets and some (fake) flowers, the room is almost there. The rooms below are amazing. I now want to add on an entirely new room and put marble counters in with the washer and dryer! That won’t be happening anytime soon. How come I don’t see any lint in these photos? Ok, I’m inspired to go clean my laundry room and make it more sophisticated! Does it inspire you when you look at photos of other people’s organized rooms?

Colorful Mondays {Flowers}

I guess I’m getting anxious for Spring. After a dark, gloomy, icy rain weekend, I want to see the flowers bloom outdoors! Looking at the colorful flowers certainly inspires me. How about you?

Shepard’s Pie

IMG_7688ShepPieSlice

Shepard’s Pie is one of my favorite meals to make. It has everything you need pretty much in just one bite… the potatoes, meat and vegetables. I make it in a quick, simple way. With three little kids, I can’t slave in the kitchen for too long. The most time-consuming part is peeling all the potatoes. I usually mix a couple sweet potatoes with the white potatoes so it’s even more sweet and delicious. When making the mashed potatoes, I use a lot of butter and some milk. Those are the only two ingredients that I add other than the potatoes. I do not add salt. There is enough in the butter.  As for the actual meat, this is what you’ll need:

1 lb of ground meat
frozen vegetables
1 packet of brown gravy
1/2 onion or onion powder

As you can see, there are not that many ingredients needed for the meat portion. I brown the meat. You can add 1/2 chopped onion, if you have the time. Usually, I just throw in some onion powder so I get the taste because it’s hard for me to find the time to chop and peel so much. While the meat is browning, I make the gravy. I use a packet as listed above. Another time saver, I make it in the microwave as the directions say on the package. Once it’s made, I pour it on the meat in the pan. I let the flavor soak in a bit and then I add some mixed frozen vegetables. Add however much you would like. I usually add a carrot, pea, onion pearl and celery mix. However, if I don’t have a bag, I just use whatever bag of mixed veges I have. In the picture above, I added extra peas on the side to mimic the Irish flag! After the vegetables are warm, I pour it into a casserole dish. I top it off with the mashed potatoes. I put the lid on and bake for just about 10 minutes. There it is! It’s done! More often than not, I make this while my youngest is napping. This is a great dish to prepare in advance. I simply put the entire casserole dish in the refrigerator until it’s dinner time. Enjoy!

My Dream Cottage in Maine

I found my dream cottage in Maine! It’s called Hunting Island Cottage  and it’s perched on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It is built with stones and a coziness that I would absolutely love to share with my family. Here are a few pictures of the cottage. Do you get inspired by looking at a quiet, personal retreat such as this? I know I do! I’m going to pour myself some tea, take a seat in my dining room, and imagine that I’m sitting by this roaring fire and looking out at the pounding waves.

Do most people have green on their minds in March? I daydream about taking our children to Ireland for the first time. This will be their first overseas trip. Since my husband still has family there, it would especially be a great time for all of us. I daydream about the kids wearing Irish sweaters while running around on the bright green grass… walking along window shopping in a tiny village… being seaside on the Dingle peninsula… all of these thoughts plus many, many more go through my head. It’s very inspiring for me to think about taking our family to such a historical country with personal history included. Does the thought of taking your children to historical places inspire you?
